The Shrub
The blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is an elegant and resilient shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. Depending on the variety, it can reach up to three meters in height, standing out for its longevity and natural beauty.
Its roots are truly unique: instead of root hairs, they have a specialized system for absorbing water and nutrients, essential for the plant’s healthy growth. This feature makes the blueberry particularly adaptable to various environments and climatic conditions.
The branches, which sprout from the crown of the plant, grow upright and can reach around 2.5 meters, forming a vigorous and productive shrub. During winter, the blueberry requires a period of cold to rest and recover energy, thus preparing to offer, in the following season, its delicious and nutritious fruits.
More than just a plant, the blueberry represents the perfect balance between delicacy and strength — a harmony that makes its fruits so appreciated all over the world.
The Flower
Before giving rise to its much-loved fruit, the blueberry enchants with its delicate blossoms. Small and bell-shaped, usually white or pink, they appear in graceful clusters, lending the shrub a subtle and elegant beauty.
Beyond adorning the fields, the blueberry’s flowers play an essential role: they attract bees and other pollinators, ensuring an abundant and high-quality harvest. In this meeting between nature and the invisible work of the flowers lies the promise of the sweet and nutritious fruits we all know.
The blooming of the blueberry is also a spectacle of nature, marking the beginning of a new life cycle for the plant. Each delicate petal announces the coming of the fresh blueberry season — tiny blue treasures, full of flavour and health benefits.
More than a mere detail, the blueberry flower represents the first step in a journey that ends at the table, in the form of a delicious and vibrant fruit.
The Fruit
The blueberry is a small deep-blue berry, whose colour and size vary depending on the cultivar. Its surface is covered by a thin waxy layer, responsible for its velvety and elegant appearance — known as the bloom.
During the ripening process, a true transformation takes place: chlorophyll decreases, while sugars and anthocyanins increase — the natural pigments that give the fruit its vibrant blue colour and remarkable antioxidant power. That is why the blueberry is known as the “King of Antioxidants”, but also as the “fruit of youth”, the “fruit of health”, and even the “fruit of longevity.”
Rich in essential vitamins and minerals, the blueberry is a true source of vitamins A, B, C, and K, as well as potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, and iron.
Each tiny berry is, therefore, much more than flavour — it is health, vitality, and well-being in the form of fruit.
